Why take vitamin K2 as a supplement?

Vitamin K2 plays an essential role in the absorption and transformation of calcium and in blood coagulation. Vitamin K2 ensures the activation of so-called GLA proteins (Gamma-Carboxylglutaminsäure), which in turn control calcium and influence certain blood clotting factors.

Through the process of "carboxylation", vitamin K2 ensures that the calcium you've absorbed through food or supplements gets where you want it to go, and there strengthens and repairs bone structures. In the case of vitamin K2 deficiency, your body cannot store some of the calcium.

Vitamin K2 deficiency is suspected of causing osteoporosis. As the body cannot produce enough vitamin K2 itself, we rely on intake from food or a dietary supplement.

Adequate vitamin K2 intake is important for all human beings, an acute deficiency causes symptoms such as a blood clotting disorder. In the long term, the risk of osteoporosis increases and calcification of the arteries can be promoted.

Where can I find vitamin K2?

Vitamin K2 is found in leafy vegetables and cabbages such as kale, parsley, spinach and broccoli, as well as in foods made from animal products. Cottage cheese and certain types of cheese that have undergone a bacterial ripening process, such as Brie (soft cheese). Meat, offal and egg yolk are other sources of K2. However, the amount of vitamin K contained in the most common foods, i.e. those most used in the daily diet, is low to very low.

The dosage of vitamin K2

Based on current medical knowledge, a dosage of 100 to 200 µg per day is recommended, thus üabove the current European Union recommendation. The reason for this, however, is that this EU recommendation is based solely on the maintenance of blood clotting factors, and knowledge of possible benefits in preventing bone disease has not yet been incorporated.

In a Dutch study conducted over a 3-month period, no signs of problems were found when supplementing with K2, dosages of up to 360 µg were tested.
