What is glycine?
Glycine is a non-essential amino acid. Non-essential means that it can be produced by our body and therefore does not have to be supplied from outside. As is often the case in our diet, however, there is a sufficient and an optimal amount. The name glycine comes from Greek and means "süß".
Where is glycine found?
Glycine is found in a variety of common foods. Here are some examples of its content per 100g. Chicken breast fillet (0.95g), chicken eggs (0.43g), cow's milk (0.07g), pumpkin seeds (1.85g).
Why is glycine important for your body?
Glycine plays an essential role in protein synthesis, particularly collagen synthesis. One in three molecules in collagen structures is glycine. Glass bone disease is a defect in which the amino acid glycine can no longer be optimally integrated into collagen structures, leading to very brittle bones.
Glycine is also a precursor of various other substances such as creatine (glycine+arginine+methionine), glutathione (glycine+cysteine+glutamate) and purines.
In general, it seems that our overall glycine intake is insufficient and that we don't reach the recommended amount of glycine per day.
A balanced meat-based diet allows us to reach around 1.5 to 3 g of glycine. An optimal intake, however, is around 10g of glycine per day.
How to take glycine:
Glycine is already very mild. Some people even deliberately use it as a sugar/sugar substitute for these properties. Simply pour the recommended amount into a shake or juice and drink. The optimal dosage would be 2x5g spread over the day
